Across Nigeria, a powerful movement is taking root, fueled by the passion and dedication of young minds. Ashoka, a renowned organization fostering social innovation, is at the forefront of this movement, empowering young people to become the change they wish to see in their communities. This isn’t a distant dream; it’s a tangible reality unfolding through the Ashoka Young Changemakers programme.

The recent Africa’s Young Changemakers Festival in Lagos marked a significant milestone for Ashoka in Nigeria and brought together 300 participants, including students and educators, young changemakers, social entrepreneurs and partners.  The festival served as a platform to celebrate the graduation of the programme’s third cohort, a group of exceptional young individuals between the ages of 15 and 20 who are united by a common thread: a relentless drive to make a difference.

Additionally, the event  introduced nine remarkable Ashoka Young Changemakers recognized for their exceptional  leadership and groundbreaking solutions to Nigeria’s pressing social issues including challenges in mental health, education, environmental sustainability, and gender equality.

These Young Changemakers are more than just dreamers. They are problem-solvers: Keenly aware of the challenges facing their communities, they don’t shy away. Instead, they develop impactful solutions to tackle issues like environmental protection, gender equality, and access to education, as highlighted by Paula Ugwu, the youth and partnerships manager for West Africa at Ashoka.

Collaborative spirits: They understand the power of teamwork. Building strong teams with friends, family, and volunteers allows them to implement their solutions effectively, as emphasized by Josephine Nzerem, Director of Venture and Talent for Ashoka Africa and Regional Director for Anglophone West Africa.

Change agents: Their dedication is inspiring. They are actively creating positive change in their communities, not waiting for someone else to take the lead.

Bridging the gap: Recognizing the importance of collaboration across generations, they are building networks with adults, including government officials and social entrepreneurs. This allows them to leverage diverse perspectives and resources, as noted by Angelou Ezeilo, Co-president of Ashoka Africa and Director of the CTeach programme.

Youth voices: They are becoming powerful advocates for young people’s needs and perspectives. Their voices are being heard, shaping a more inclusive future, as Ugwu highlighted.

These young changemakers didn’t reached this stage by chance. They’ve been meticulously selected through a comprehensive process. Ashoka seeks individuals working in diverse fields  from digital litzeracy to mental health  ensuring a holistic approach to tackling community issues.

The work of these young changemakers will have a direct and positive impact on young people across Nigeria. Their innovative solutions and strategies will foster a more inclusive environment for future generations.

The Ashoka Young Changemakers programme goes beyond simply identifying exceptional youth. This year, the program has been expanded to include teachers, creating a year-long journey of shared learning and growth. “We believe empowered teachers can inspire and guide future generations of leaders,” said Nzerem.

This marks the third cohort of the Ashoka Young Changemakers programme, signifying a growing movement. “This is not just another program,” said Nzerem. “We are fostering a collaborative environment where teachers and students work together. This equips future Ashoka Young Changemakers with the necessary skills, but more importantly, it builds a critical mass of future leaders who can tackle Africa’s challenges.”

Gone are the days of waiting for tomorrow’s leaders. These young minds are leading today! By providing them with the tools and support they need, Ashoka is building a generation of collaborative leaders who can make a real difference.

Ashoka believes in the power of shared leadership, where everyone contributes their unique strengths for a greater collective impact. “We are excited to see these young changemakers continue their journeys and inspire others,” said Ezeilo. “Their dedication is a shining example of our ‘Everyone a Changemaker’ movement, proving that positive change is possible regardless of age, background, or resources.”

The future is indeed bright, and it’s being shaped by the passion and dedication of these young Nigerians. Ashoka Young Changemakers programme is a beacon of hope, inspiring young people across the nation to become active participants in building a better tomorrow.
