How Nigerian Teen Creator ‘Big Shaxxy’ Balances School and Stardom Online

At just 17, Sharon Uwazie Chimudiebube, known widely by her online name Big Shaxxy, has built an audience that many seasoned entertainers would admire.

The Port Harcourt–based student and content creator is part of a growing wave of young Nigerians transforming social media into a stage for creative expression and opportunity.

Born on 20 May 2007 in Mbaise, Imo State, Shaxxy began posting short skits and lip-sync videos on TikTok in her early teens.

What started as a pastime quickly grew into a steady rise — today, she has more than 850,000 followers and over 85 million video likes on the platform.

“I’ve always loved performing and telling stories,” she says. “Acting and content creation allow me to explore emotions and connect with people on a personal level.”

Shaxxy’s videos — often inspired by everyday Nigerian life, youth culture, and humorous moments — have made her one of the recognisable young voices in Nigeria’s digital entertainment space. A former pupil of Archdeacon Crowther Memorial Girls’ School, she is currently pursuing her university studies while balancing her expanding creative career.

Nigeria is home to one of Africa’s largest communities of online creators. According to data from Statista (2024), the country ranks among the continent’s top three TikTok markets, with millions of users producing and sharing short-form content daily. For many, the platform has become both a stage and a classroom — a place to experiment, build confidence, and gain visibility beyond traditional media.

“Social media has democratised fame for African youth,” says a media analyst based in Lagos who studies digital culture. “Young people like Shaxxy are building their brands entirely online, using authenticity and relatability to connect with audiences.”

This shift has also blurred the line between acting and influencing. For Shaxxy, the two roles complement each other. “Acting lets me play different people, while influencing lets me share who I really am,” she explains.

Still, life as a digital creator in Nigeria comes with challenges. Internet costs remain high, and creators often face inconsistent earnings and limited professional support. Shaxxy says balancing her education with content production isn’t always easy. “I have to plan my shoots around classes, but I try to stay consistent,” she says.

Her story reflects a growing trend among young Nigerians redefining what success looks like — blending education, creativity, and entrepreneurship in ways previous generations could not. Across Africa, teenagers are rewriting the script on fame, turning platforms like TikTok and Instagram into powerful tools for self-expression, identity, and storytelling.

For Shaxxy, it’s about more than numbers. “I want people to feel something when they watch me — to laugh, think, or see a bit of themselves,” she says.

As Nigeria’s creative economy continues to evolve, young voices like hers suggest that the next generation of entertainers may not emerge from traditional studios or casting calls, but from the digital stages they’ve built for themselves — one video at a time.
