The Zamfara State Government met with officials of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Nigeria on the operationalisation of the Integrated Smart States Programme (ISSP) in the state.
The strategic scoping meeting took place last Thursday at the United Nations House in Abuja.
The engagement served as a critical follow-up to the recent visit of UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed to Zamfara State, where Governor Dauda Lawal underscored the state’s commitment to sustainable development.
The objective of the meeting was to crystallise the partnership discussions initiated during that visit, specifically focusing on the operationalisation of the ISSP in the state.
Key highlights from the discussions on energy and renewable energy included integrated energy planning, which focuses on supporting the implementation of the state’s newly established electricity policy and regulatory framework.
Other areas included decentralised solutions through the scaling up of mini-grids and small hydropower projects to serve underserved communities, and public infrastructure solarisation through the transition of healthcare and educational facilities to clean and reliable power.
Additional areas of collaboration include electric mobility through the exploration of green transport solutions for urban centres, and the establishment of a Renewable Energy Centre of Excellence as a regional hub for research and skills development in green technologies.
The state government, under Governor Lawal, is also looking to leverage the partnership to drive digital transformation and enterprise development, ensuring that reliable power translates directly into productive economic activities for youth and women.
