As  usual since 2009, when Boko Haram surfaced in the northern part of the country,  since then, the country had consistently been witnessing spate of attacks around the country, especially agricultural producing states like Benue, Taraba, Yobe,  Nasarawa, Kaduna, Gombe,  Borno, Zamfara and other eastern states,  whenever it is planting season and during harvest season. Adding one and one together, it turns out to be a devilish tactics by these armed hoodlums to deprive the country of expected  bumper agricultural  harvest  which would eventually affect the economy of the country.  An assemblage of security  experts drawn from the police, military and DSS who are retired senior officers under a platform known as “ Total Security Platform (TSP   had progressively identified the noticeable modus  operandi of the terrorist group which had metamorphosed into banditry, kidnapping and  robbery.  The terrorists organize cordinated attacks on agricultural villages whenever it is harvest and planting seasons thereby preventing farmers access to their farmlands. It was further observed that these bandits cart away farming products by preventing farmers the opportunity to harvest their products for economic gains. Often times, these  agricultural products are devoured by herdsmen and their cows thereby millions of Naira as economic loss.  Insecurity has many  tentacles which becomes very obvious because they are aimed or targeted at creating unrest and fear in the society. It  makes the people not to have confidence in their government and most especially the security agencies whose constitutional mandate is to protect life and property. The TSP platform observed that the terrorist dang  know when farmers go to their farms to cultivate, so, they ensure that  attacks on villages and security areas like police stations and military  formations  are carried out to destabilize the security personels before carrying out raids in the communities by killing traditional rulers or kidnapping them to source for money to acquire more fire arms.  This strategic move by these invading terrorists group had been so consistent that even the federal  government expressed its concern when  recently the Minister for Defence Dr Mohammed Baduru disclosed that Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has put in place a Standby Force to curb terrorism and other transborder crimes in the subregion.

Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Dr Mohammed Badaru,  disclosed at the 43rd edition  of the ordinary meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of the Chiefs of Defence.

Noting that  the meeting underscored shared commitments to addressing the critical security challenges confronting the sub-region.

He urged members to take advantage of the gathering and mobilise against those threats and focus with a view to deny terror…

And support the initiative to bring ECOWAS Standby Force, ECOWAS peace support operation. As well as maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.

Dr Badaru announce the activation of the ECOWAS Standby Force to combat terrorism in the subregion,” Badaru said.

“The activation of this force underscores our collective determination to confront the threat of terrorism with regards to the security of the subregion.

However a member of Total security platform Mr Sunday Maichibi, former anti robbery Squad Senior Officer (SARS) argued that  If it’s through that foreign hands of Esau is promoting insurgency in the country, we have not been updated details of how our government summons the ambassador or High Commissioner of such country and confront him with facts, even if it means recalling ours back home, placing such country on high alert.

People who commit heinous crime, sentenced to death are alive, no governor want to sign dead warrant, these are Psychological aspects that promote crime.

The master of all is political offences in our law is seen as a preserved for the poor, the rich are treated with disdain when it’s comes to criminality. Take example of the Offa Bank Robbery, political figures were linked to the case, some of us saw the misleading details on the case. the more you look, the less you see syndrome. These can promote persistence in crime circle.

There is need for government to create a strong crime statistics and research department, shouldered with the responsibility to keep record of crime. Investigation of the root causes of every crime committed, come up with it’s findings and recommendations, and immediate action is taken by government.

The insecurity comes in different ways, like the attack on the convoy of the Governor of Borno State. Also, Since December 2024, Edo State has been seemingly grappling with a resurgence of crime insecurity and this has left many residents wondering how the State, which was repositioned as one of Nigeria’s safest places to live and do business during the Godwin Obaseki-led administration has now become so unsafe. That led to the banning of the  state security outfit which has now been un banned, truly the federal government should show more seriousness in its resolve to address the issues of insecurity in the country . The question on many lips what is hindering the establishment of state police an idea that would have helped to either eradicate or scale down insecurity in the country what the leadership needs is will power to ensure the implementation of state police in system , state police would have eradicated insecurity in every state. curbing insecurity around the country can only be effective when state policing system is constitutionally put in place there is no alternative to state policing system community policing can only be more effective when there is state policing system in place it is therefore advisable for the government to ensure the introduction and establishment of state policing in the country.
