Retired Customs officer, Mrs. Meg Otsu, has called on the federal government to intensify its efforts in the fight against crime, especially on the highways. According to her, herdsmen shot her on the highway but she managed to survive.
Otsu said: “We were going home for the Christmas celebration on December 22, 2017. The journey was smooth. My husband was driving and I was in the passenger seat in the front, while my two children were sitting behind us in the car. After the Benin bypass, we were on our way to Auchi, heading to Afuze, when I sighted some armed herdsmen and I quickly alerted my husband, who stopped and tried to reverse the vehicle. But he was too late as the herdsmen started firing at us. A bullet hit me on the head and I passed out. I didn’t know what happened after that, until about five days later when I came out of coma.
“My husband narrated how he managed to drive like the popular actor, James Bond, and rushed me to the hospital. The doctor told me that the pellets pieced my flesh but did not penetrate the skull. He extracted some pellets from my head and near my right eye. Medical experts are still puzzled over the mystery of my survival; they explained that my survival was divine intervention as there was no reason for me to survive. I still have two pellets in my head, but the doctor said they are in a safe position.
“My survival is attributed to God. I don’t go to native doctors, as one person claimed. I was armed with my Rosary and the image of Mother Mary during the attack. My enemies did not rejoice over my misery. God saved me from the claws of death. I saw death and I conquered death. I died and resurrected.”
Her husband, Chris Otsu, said: “It was an experience that I won’t wish my enemies. My wife passed out and I thought she was dead. I can’t still understand how I drove the vehicle in reverse for about two kilometres before I was able to make it with drive. In fact, God drove the vehicle for me. I was just there but the Holy Spirit took over the steering. I thought that it was over but God said it was not over for my family. To God be the glory.”
