The Member for Badagry Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Sesi Whingan, has strongly condemned the shooting of a constituent and housewife, Mrs Elizabeth Hunsu, by a Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) officer.

The incident occurred at Igbogbele, Badagry area of Lagos State on Friday.

In a statement he personally signed, Whingan said the incident was a deeply troubling reminder of the danger, harassment, and avoidable harm that his constituents face along the Badagry-Owode-Seme corridors.

He described the situation as unacceptable, noting that Badagry has always been a peaceful, resilient, and united community.

He said, “I received with deep concern the distressing incident that occurred today at Igbogbele, where an officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service reportedly fired a shot that struck Mrs. Hunsu Elizabeth while she was inside her home.

“We are grateful that her life was spared, and I pray for her swift and complete recovery.

“My heartfelt sympathy goes out to her, her family, and everyone affected by the emotional shock this incident has caused.

“It is deeply troubling that this is not the first time our people have endured danger, harassment, and avoidable harm along the Badagry-Owode-Seme corridors.

“The high concentration of checkpoints, coupled with recurrent cases of officers chasing civilians into busy communities and marketplaces, has continued to put innocent lives at risk. This situation is unacceptable and must not continue.

“I want to state clearly and without ambiguity that the safety, dignity, and wellbeing of the people of Badagry are non-negotiable. Any act of reckless conduct, excessive force, or intimidation by security agencies charged with protecting our borders is strongly condemned.

“Such behaviour undermines public trust and endangers the very citizens they are meant to safeguard.”

Whingan, who is Deputy Chairman, Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream), said his office would immediately intensify engagement with the leadership of the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Nigeria Customs Service, and other relevant authorities to demand accountability and enforce reforms that prioritise public safety.

“We shall continue to follow up to ensure that these agencies operate with discipline, professionalism, and respect for human lives,” he said.

He appealed to his constituents to remain calm and law abiding.

He added, “Let us not take the law into our own hands or respond in ways that may escalate the situation.

“We will pursue justice and corrective measures through the appropriate channels, and I assure you that we will not relent in protecting the interests of our people.”
