The Group General Manager of Continental Hotel Group, Karl Hala, has emphasised the immense potential of Nigeria’s tourism sector, calling for concerted efforts to unlock its economic benefits.
The Continental Hotel Group manages two iconic hotels – Lagos and Abuja Continental hotels.
Hala stressed that Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage, youthful population, and strategic location make it an attractive destination for tourists and investors alike.
“Nigeria is often defined by what the world thinks it knows. Today, we are here to redefine it by what we know it can become,” he declared.
The hospitality expert spoke at the Eko Vanguard International Summit & Awards (E-VISA 2026) event with the theme, “Unlocking Nigeria’s Tourism Potential,” which brought together stakeholders from the public and private sectors to explore ways to harness the country’s tourism potential.
He highlighted the need for structured approaches to tourism development, citing the global tourism industry’s significant contribution to GDP and job creation.
His words: “Nigeria’s tourism sector remains significantly underdeveloped relative to its potential.
“If structured properly, tourism can create jobs, drive SMEs, support culture, and attract foreign exchange.”
Hala emphasized the importance of addressing negative perceptions about Nigeria, calling for initiatives like the “Good News Nigeria” campaign to promote a more positive narrative about the country.
The event also showcased Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity, with performances and exhibitions highlighting the country’s vibrant music, art, and cuisine.
He encouraged attendees to explore the country’s many attractions, from the bustling streets of Lagos to the scenic beauty of the Jos Plateau.
As Nigeria seeks to diversify its economy, Hala urged stakeholders to prioritise tourism development, leveraging the country’s unique cultural and natural assets to drive economic growth.
Hala was later presented with an award plaque by Erelu Abiola Dosumu, a distinguished member, Board of Trustees, Eko Tourism Foundation, in recognition of his contributions to the Culture and Tourism Ecosystem in Nigeria.
The E-VISA 2026 event marked a significant step towards unlocking Nigeria’s tourism potential, with participants committing to work together to promote sustainable tourism practices and create jobs.
