A wave of excitement swept through the International Conference Centre, Enugu, as hundreds of students, parents, and community leaders gathered to witness the disbursement of N250 million in bursaries and scholarships to beneficiaries from across Enugu West Senatorial District.
The event, organised by the senator representing the district, Osita Ngwu, drew political leaders, traditional rulers, religious figures and education stakeholders from across the state, all united by a shared belief in the power of education to transform lives.
For many of the students present, the moment symbolised more than financial support. It represented renewed hope and an opportunity to pursue academic dreams that once seemed uncertain.
The initiative, now in its second year, is anchored on the Enugu West Academy, a platform created by Ngwu to provide academic support and mentorship for students across the five local government areas of the district.
Under the programme, a total of N250 million was distributed to students who participated in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) as well as postgraduate students pursuing advanced studies.
Addressing the gathering, Ngwu reflected on the origins of the academy, explaining that the idea was born out of a concern for many bright students who lacked the opportunities needed to pursue higher education.
“Today, we gather not merely to celebrate scholarships or distribute bursaries; we gather to reaffirm a vision that the future of Enugu West Senatorial District will be defined not by limitations, but by knowledge; not by circumstance, but by opportunity; and not by chance, but by deliberate investment in our young people. We will leave no child behind,” he said.
He emphasised that human capital development remains the most important investment any leader can make, describing education as the strongest pillar for sustainable progress.
He said the academy has continued to expand its reach across the district. In 2025 alone, more than 2,600 students benefited from UTME preparation classes and registration support organised by the academy across the five local government areas in Enugu West. He added that the programme currently supports more than 4,000 students through 19 physical learning centres as well as online classes. Ngwu also recalled that during the maiden edition of the initiative in 2024, a total of N81 million was awarded to 18 outstanding students studying in universities across the country.
The event also attracted national attention, with the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, commending the initiative and pledging further support. Akpabio announced a donation of N100 million to the Enugu West Academy, describing Ngwu’s intervention in education as both timely and impactful.
“What Osita has done is an uncommon project. When you give a child a good education, he or she can go anywhere in the world. He is a giver not because he has too much, but because he does not want anyone around him to suffer,” he said.
He further noted that Ngwu had distinguished himself in the Senate, adding that his performance earned him appointment as one of the principal officers of the National Assembly.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, represented at the event by the Deputy Governor, Ifeanyi Ossai, said the scholarship programme aligns with the state government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the education sector. He said initiatives, such as the Enugu West Academy, complement the government’s investments in modern learning infrastructure, including the establishment of smart schools across the state. He encouraged the students to remain focused on their studies and make the most of the opportunity before them.
“Go and conquer and come back with honour to your families, the state, and the entire country,” he said.
Delivering the keynote address titled “Leaving no one behind: The role of scholarships in closing the gap,” the Registrar of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Dr. C. N. Nnebedum, highlighted the financial challenges many students face in pursuing higher education. She said initiatives such as Ngwu’s scholarship scheme demonstrate that leadership goes beyond occupying public office.
“When you educate a child, you are changing the trajectory of an entire generation. With this scholarship, Senator Ngwu is investing in families and the future of our children. He is a shining example for others to follow,” she said.
She urged the beneficiaries to take their studies seriously and make meaningful contributions to society.
“It shouldn’t just make you countable, but accountable,” she added, noting that scholarships remain powerful tools for promoting equity and expanding opportunities.
Chairman of the occasion and Vice Chancellor of the University on the Niger, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, represented by Dr. Ugo Chime, described the initiative as a genuine effort to give back to society. He said the programme should inspire other leaders and well-meaning individuals to invest in education and community development.
Earlier, the Director and Head of Strategy at Enugu West Academy, Kanayochukwu Ani, said the programme had grown steadily into a platform of hope for families across the district.
“What began years ago as a simple desire by Senator Osita Ngwu to help students do better has grown into a platform of hope for families across Enugu West,” he said.
Ani added that the initiative reinforces the message that education remains one of the most powerful tools for transforming lives and communities.
Dignitaries at the event included local government chairmen from Enugu West, serving senators such as Deputy Chief Whip Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, as well as former and serving commissioners in Enugu State.
