Honeyland Schools has won the first Lagos Regionals of the Season 9 ‘I Beg to Differ’ debate tournament, organised by a popular radio station, Nigeria Info FM.
The winner defeated Straitgate High School at the final held in Lagos.
The champion edged the runner-up by just 1.5 points while debating the motion, “Capitalism Is the Best System for National Development.”
Straitgate High School placed second, with the organisers describing the finale as one of the closest in the tournament’s history.
Heritage Group of Schools secured third place after beating Great Solid Rock College by a unanimous decision in the bronze-medal match, which focused on the motion, “Police Brutality in Nigeria Is Primarily a Result of Systemic Failure, Not Individual Misconduct.”
The first leg of the Lagos Regionals was sponsored by GZ Industries, with additional support from Fina Trust Microfinance Bank, Obiwezy Gadgets, and Multiplan Pathway College.
The organisers credited the partners for helping deliver one of the most competitive editions to date. Honeyland Schools received a cash prize of ₦5 million alongside smartphones for its contestants.
Straitgate High School earned ₦3 million and Bluetooth speakers, while Heritage Group of Schools took home ₦2 million and headphones.
All three schools have qualified for the National Tournament of Champions scheduled for August 2026, where they will compete against top teams from across Nigeria.
