Former presidential aspirant, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen has identified strong institutions, prioritisation of production over consumption, and trust as the foundation of governance and societal progress.
Hayatu-Deen, who is now a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress(ADC), according to a statement by his media office, on Sunday, stated this at the 25th anniversary of the Independent Newspaper.
The ADC leader noted that strong institutions are essential for sustaining progress beyond personalities, while a productive economy driven by innovation and human capital development remains key to long-term prosperity.
He added that trust, earned through consistency, accountability and fairness, is indispensable for functional governance, thriving markets and national cohesion.

Hayatu-Deen, while congratulating the Independent Newspaper on its silver jubilee, described the milestone as a remarkable testament to resilience, professionalism and democratic commitment in Nigeria’s evolving media landscape.
According to him, the newspaper has not only chronicled Nigeria’s history, but has actively contributed to shaping it by upholding the enduring responsibility of the press to inform and hold power accountable without fear or favour.
He implored Independent Newspapers and the larger media community to continue to uphold the highest standards of independence and integrity, stating that public trust remains their most valuable asset.
According to him, ”A free and Independent press serves as society’s early warning system. it shines light when there is darkness, asks questions where silence would be easier and speaks truth where power may prefer convenience.”
