Gunmen kill two in fresh Kwara attack

Gunmen on Tuesday attacked a convoy in Ifelodun Local Government Area, killing two hunters in what marks yet another disturbing incident in the area’s worsening security situation.

The victims were part of a group escorting the remains of three fellow hunters from Oro-Ago to Oke-Oyan for burial when the assailants struck, just a few kilometres from their destination. The attack, by all accounts, was sudden and calculated.

A community source, Chief Odofin, said the convoy was ambushed as it approached Oke-Oyan, turning what was already a solemn journey into a tragic encounter. He noted, however, that the swift intervention of security operatives and local hunters helped to avert further loss of life.

Personnel comprising forest guards, police officers and other vigilante elements reportedly responded promptly, forcing the attackers to retreat and restoring a measure of calm to the area.

The bodies of the slain hunters have since been deposited in a mortuary in Oro-Ago, while the convoy, under tighter security, proceeded to complete the burial rites of the earlier victims.

This latest episode comes on the heels of a recent attack on a church within the same local government, where several worshippers were abducted, though some were later rescued. The pattern of incidents has heightened anxiety among residents.

Stakeholders across Kwara South have continued to sound the alarm, urging authorities to act decisively. There is now a growing consensus that without firmer security measures, such brazen attacks may become an unfortunate norm rather than an aberration.
