The call for state police in Nigeria is gaining momentum, with the Igbo Heroes and Icons Foundation welcoming President Bola Tinubu’s directive on the matter.
National Coordinator, Igbo Heroes and Icons Foundation, Chinedu Nsofor, believes decentralised policing will improve intelligence gathering and response times, especially in rural areas.
Nsofor argues that Nigeria’s centralised policing system is no longer effective in addressing the country’s security challenges. He cited banditry, insurgency, kidnapping, and armed attacks on rural communities as examples of threats that require a more localised approach.

Nsofor noted that state police would allow governors and state security authorities to respond immediately to threats within their jurisdictions.
He emphasised the need for strong institutional safeguards to prevent misuse of the force, including independent state police service commissions and federal government oversight.
The foundation also stressed the importance of merit-based recruitment, transparent training programmes, and coordination with local security networks.
The proposal for state police, he further said, is aimed at addressing Nigeria’s security challenges through more localised and effective policing.
