An Igbo youth organisation, the Youth Renaissance for Good Governance (YRGG), has dismissed allegations against the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, describing them as politically motivated.
Representing over 30,000 members across Nigeria and the diaspora, the group challenged the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) to produce the report allegedly indicting the Deputy Speaker, over his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and Nigerian Law School records.
In a statement signed by the National President, Dr. Ebekuo Madu, and the National Secretary, Paul Nwachukwu, the YRGG maintained that no verified document exists that questions Kalu’s credentials.
“We wish to place before the Nigerian public the irrefutable fact that there exists no credible, official, or verified report that indicted the Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu,” the statement read.
The group cited a 2023 NYSC verification exercise, which they said laid the matter to rest. It said an official review confirmed that Kalu’s service certificate was legitimately obtained in accordance with the NYSC Act.
The YRGG also addressed rumours of potential disciplinary action by the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC), dismissing the claims as “frivolous.” They argued that the LPDC would not allow its platform to be used for political smear campaigns.
The statement further described the renewed attacks as a preemptive strike by political interests in Abia State. While Kalu has not declared a bid for the governorship, the group said his rising profile has “unsettled” rivals.
“Rt. Hon. Kalu has not even declared any intention to run for the governorship of Abia State, yet these forces are so terrified of his potential that they have resorted to hiring proxies,” the group stated.
