Mrs Jennifer Atser, mother of 16-year-old Sesugh Atser, who was recently killed in Makurdi, has appealed to Governor Hyacinth Alia and relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding her son’s death and ensure justice.

The 35-year-old single mother of five said her son contributed to supporting the family through construction work and apprenticeship. She said tragedy struck on May 23 when she was informed that her son had been shot dead.

“I was shocked. I didn’t know what to do,” she said.

But information from the police said Atser was linked to an EFCC fraud investigation and was among suspects, who escaped custody.

According to police spokesperson Udeme Edet, operatives responded to intelligence on May 23 and encountered armed suspects.

“While retreating, operatives sighted Atser lying in a pool of blood and rushed him to hospital where he was confirmed dead,” police stated. However, Mrs Atser rejected the account, saying: “My son was hardworking. He worked at construction sites and as a furniture apprentice.” She also claimed she had not seen her son’s body weeks after the incident. The teenager’s school proprietress and apprenticeship coach described him as hardworking and responsible. His furniture instructor, Philip Udo, alleged EFCC officials chased and shot the boy after luring him to a hotel. EFCC officials declined comments. Meanwhile, the police spokesperson said the Commissioner of Police had ordered a full investigation.
