The Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on Wednesday raised the alarm over alleged political intimidation, violence and harassment targeting its members and other opposition groups, calling for urgent investigations and protection for those reportedly threatened.

In a strongly worded press release issued on Wednesday, the party accused individuals allegedly associated with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of disrupting opposition activities, destroying campaign materials, issuing threats and using public authority to intimidate political opponents.

Speaking on behalf of the party at a press conference in Benin City, the NDC’s Edo Central senatorial district candidate and Director-General of the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement, Mr John Yakubu, said the party had documented several reported incidents.

These included the arrest and detention of its members, the vandalisation of campaign offices, the disruption of political meetings, the destruction of billboards, and alleged gunfire at a gathering of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Igueben, which reportedly left several members seriously injured.

The party also expressed concern over alleged threats against one of its members, Mr Maxwell, reportedly linked to his support for the NDC and the use of his hotel in Illeh-Ekpoma as a venue for party meetings.

Furthermore, the NDC alleged that commercial drivers and motorcycle operators in Esan North-East and Esan West were being pressured to wear APC-branded caps as a condition for carrying out their daily business.

The party called for an investigation into a statement allegedly attributed to the APC State Chairman, Jarrett Tenebe, concerning the use of AK-47 rifles against opposition members during the 2027 elections.

It urged the APC leadership to clarify the reported remarks and publicly condemn all forms of political violence.

The NDC also called on Governor Monday Okpebholo, the police, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant authorities to ensure that all political parties could organise and conduct their activities peacefully without fear of intimidation.

Among its demands were impartial investigations into the allegations, adequate protection for individuals facing credible threats, accountability for any wrongdoing established by the evidence, and independent documentation of the reported incidents by civil society organisations and the media.

Insisting that the allegations should be investigated on their merits, the NDC said it would pursue lawful means to protect its members and seek redress.

The party urged its supporters to remain calm and peaceful, warning them against retaliation while calling on security agencies to uphold the law impartially and without political bias.

“Edo belongs to all its citizens. No party stands above the law,” the statement declared.
