Dr Zainab Bagudu, wife of Kebbi Governor, has called on government at all levels to show more commitment to cancer prevention awareness campaigns.
Bagudu, also the Founder, Medicaid Cancer Foundation (MCF), made the call during a cancer awareness walk on Saturday in Abuja.
She said the walk tagged ”WalkAwayCancer” was aimed at raising awareness on the dangers of cancer and the need for prevention and early detection.
The governor’s wife said that anti-cancer campaign would yield more positive results if all tiers of government took it seriously.
She urged all levels of government to evolve policy measures to drive the prevention, care and treatment of cancer in the country.
“All the tiers of government should support the society and the fight against cancer by implementing life-saving policies,” she said.
Bagudu said that early detection was key to the prevention and management of cancer adding,” we should continue to preach this”
She urged the governments, corporate bodies and good spirited individuals to support the procurement of vaccines for the prevention of cervical cancer
Also speaking, Mrs Halima Tukur, a member of the House of Representatives, urged Nigerians to periodically make themselves available for cancer screening.
Tukur also called on governments and other stakeholders to take steps towards supporting cancer patients.
Mrs Gloria Orji, a cancer survivor and President, Network of People Impacted by Cancer in Nigeria (NEPICIN) said that cancer was not a death sentence.
Orji, who expressed confidence in the ability of early detection and medications to mitigate the impact of cancer, said it was time to show care to cancer patients.
She commended the MCF for its commitment and support for cancer patients in Nigeria.
Orji therefore urged cancer patients not to lose hope, assuring them of cure through dedication, faith and treatment.(NAN)
