From Aniekan Aniekan, Calabar
Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has approved an emergency desilting of major drainages in the state to mitigate the anticipated impact of rainfall in the state.
Executive Secretary of the Calabar Urban Development Authority, Dr. Ayi Effiong disclosed this while flagging off the exercise in Calabar.
Speaking while flagging off the exercise, Dr. Effiong said: “Cross River State has been marked as one of the states that will be prone to floods and we are saddled with this responsibility, keeping the town clean and also opening up the drainages.
“Without this channel on drainage, the amount of water that will flow from the drainages will not have free access to the river where it is supposed to empty itself.

“That is why we have come here by the directive of the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu. He has mandated us to carry out a mechanised desilting.
He tasked residents to desist from dumping refuse into drainages as the state government has provided dump stands across the metropolis.
“No matter what it takes, pack your refuse and take it to the dumps and we will collect it from there.
“Stop dumping waste into drainages because the resulting hazards from that exercise will also affect you and the general public,” he said.
Cross River State was listed by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), as one of the states predicted to experience an above average rainfall for 2026 with 1,800–2,200 mm of rainfall in the coastal areas and 1,500–1,800 mm in the inland areas.
