From Abdulrazaq Mungadi, Gombe
Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has announced Salihu Baba Alkali as the Executive Chairman of the state’s Board of Internal Revenue Service (BIRS).
This was disclosed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Prof Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, in a statement that was issued by Ismaila Uba Misilli, senior media aide to the governor. According to him, the governor’s approval and appointment of Alkali take immediate effect.
He explained that Alkali was a retired Director at the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), a skilled finance manager and taxation expert. He added that a new appointee is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, Certified National Accountants of Nigeria and Nigerian Institute of Management.
“He had previously served as Executive Chairman of Gombe State Board of Internal Revenue Service,” Misilli stated.
The non-renewal of Inuwa Tata’s tenure after two years of positive reforms came to many as a surprise. One of his high points was the establishment of the state revenue recovery tribunal.
The implementation of Inuwa Tata’s various tax reforms by Governor Yahaya-led administration is believed to have increased the state’s capacity for revenue generation and collection.
