Glo Foundation has partnered with Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to appreciate and celebrate its staff who keeps Lagos clean.
The event which was held at Ijora Olopa LAWMA office had hundreds of sweepers drawn from all the local governments and LCDAs across the state. The sweepers, which many do not easily reckon with despite their onerous duties, became the centre of attraction at the event.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) manager of Glo Foundation, Moralayo Craig said, “The event is organized for LAWMA staff, the sweepers, to let them know their services in the state are appreciated. They are the ones who sweep the streets of Lagos, even at great risk to their lives on the roads across the state. We do not want to overlook them and make them feel less seen. We want to use this opportunity to celebrate them and the services they render to Lagosians. She also noted that the effort of the Glo Foundation in this regard would extend to other states across the country to renew a sense of belonging.”
Craig disclosed that the event was not just a one-off. According to him, the second segment will be for skill acquisition and empowerment programmes planned for the sweepers. They would be trained in the areas of Fashion designing, jewelry, bead-making, digital skills, and pastry-making, among others.
The Managing Director of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, while appreciating Globacom for the collaboration, said: “We are here to welcome Glo Foundation as a major force in the corporate communication sector. They approached us because we all saw the hard work the 16,000 sweepers drawn from 1000 routes are doing to keep Lagos clean. Glo Foundation observed how they worked even at the risk of their lives on the road and decided to key into our program as part of the six-pillars agenda of the Governor Sanwo-Olu administration. The sweepers take the risk of keeping the city clean to have a healthy environment, economic activities would boom while we have fewer diseases. Therefore, we at LAWMA appreciate the Glo Foundation for coming up with the idea of creating a day to appreciate the sweepers across the state. We also urge other corporate organizations to emulate Glo Foundation in celebrating the sweepers.”
Amidst celebration, Globacom also held a lucky dip to give out various items, including sewing machines, an inverter Microwave oven and a grinding machine to some of the sweepers.
The sweepers expressed gratitude for the Glo Foundation’s kind gesture for the initiative. Madam Dorcas Adeniji, a resident of Oshodi who won a grinding machine, could not contain her joy, as she danced to the admiration of the audience.
