The Festac/FIBA Africa Zone 3 3×3 Basketball Championship concluded in style on September 27 at the University of Accra, celebrating a vibrant inaugural edition filled with competitive spirit and international flair.
Nigeria’s Gidi Giant (female) team and Ghana’s Iconics (male) emerged as unbeaten champions in their respective categories, each securing five consecutive wins en route to the title.
In the women’s final, Gidi Giant of Lagos delivered a commanding performance against Team Port Novo from Benin, securing a 21-10 victory. On the men’s side, Ghana’s Iconics narrowly edged out Faso Hoopers of Burkina Faso in a thrilling 21-20 encounter.
The tournament drew praise from basketball stakeholders, including Chairman of the FIBA Africa Zone 3 3×3 Council, Frank Jituboh, who applauded the participation and performances at the maiden edition in Ghana.
“I am happy that this inaugural edition held despite a few challenges. It was a good event where all participants gave a good account of themselves,” Jituboh said. “Lessons have been learned here in Ghana, and I can assure you that future editions will be better in every aspect. Kudos to all the federations and clubs that took part.”
Jituboh also extended his gratitude to the event partners, Festac Festival Renaissance and Dreals Paris, for their role in organizing the championship. He gave special recognition to Dreals Paris for supplying team kits and hosting a refresher course for referees during the event.
Jean Marc Aloumon, CEO of Dreals Paris, also expressed appreciation for the opportunity to support the growth of 3×3 basketball in the region.
“We thank FIBA Africa Zone 3 President, Col. Sam Ahmedu (Rtd) and his executive committee members, for the opportunity to partner on this event. We look forward to more collaborations that will further the popularity and development of 3×3 basketball across Africa,” Aloumon said.
The successful hosting of the championship in Ghana marks a significant step forward for 3×3 basketball in West Africa, as stakeholders look ahead to more expansive and inclusive editions in the future.
