Ghana has pulled out of a multi-year aid deal with the United States following Washington’s demand for access to citizens’ personal data.

The development was revealed by a source close to the West African nation’s government, who spoke to AFP.

Ghana’s reaction comes amid the US striking new health aid deals across Africa after President Donald Trump’s dismantling of the controversial USAID agency.

“The deal is dead,” the source revealed, adding that Ghana’s negotiating team included health officials, an indicator that it may have been partly due to health.

According to the source, the US became “hostile” and piled on “pressure” after Ghana pushed back on the demand for personal data, as reported by AFP.
