Galaxy Backbone (GBB) has unveiled an ambitious agenda aimed at unlocking the full value of the nation’s digital infrastructure as it marks its 20th anniversary.
Speaking during a media briefing in Abuja on Monday to kick off activities marking the organisation’s 20th anniversary, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Ibrahim Adeyanju, said the next phase of Galaxy Backbone’s evolution would focus on maximising existing digital assets to drive innovation, economic growth and improved public service delivery.
According to him, while the past two decades were dedicated to building the foundations of Nigeria’s digital infrastructure, the future will be centred on leveraging those investments to create greater value for government, businesses and citizens.
“The next chapter of Galaxy Backbone will not simply be about building infrastructure; it will be about maximising infrastructure. It will be about enabling innovation through smart digital solutions, expanding digital access, supporting sub-nationals, businesses and institutions, and creating opportunities for every Nigerian to participate in the digital economy,” Adeyanju said.
The MD recalled that Galaxy Backbone, established by the Federal Government in 2006, was created to provide shared ICT infrastructure and services for government institutions, reduce duplication of technology investments and improve efficiency across the public sector.
According to him, over the years, the organisation has grown into one of Nigeria’s key digital infrastructure providers, with fibre optic networks spanning nearly 30 states, world-class data centres, cloud platforms and cybersecurity solutions supporting critical government operations.
Adeyanju said the infrastructure built over the years now serves federal ministries, departments and agencies, state governments, educational institutions, development partners and private sector organisations.
He noted that the company’s investments in Tier III and Tier IV data centres, cloud services and digital collaboration platforms have helped strengthen data sovereignty, improve service delivery and enhance government efficiency.

The GBB boss stressed that the true impact of the organisation goes beyond technology assets and is reflected in faster government services, improved collaboration among institutions, enhanced transparency, stronger cybersecurity and better access to digital services for citizens.
As emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, automation and data analytics continue to reshape economies worldwide, Adeyanju said Nigeria must position itself not just as a consumer of innovation but as an active participant in shaping the future.
“We choose to lead. We choose to innovate. We choose to collaborate and we choose to build,” he declared.
He disclosed that Galaxy Backbone has adopted a renewed vision of becoming the nation’s leading enabler of innovative digital transformation and inclusive economic prosperity, supported by a mission to deliver secure, scalable and innovative digital solutions for government and businesses.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, the organisation said it will host its inaugural Digital Transformation Summit under the theme, “Powering Nigeria’s Digital Future,” bringing together stakeholders from government, academia, industry and the technology ecosystem to explore pathways for accelerating national development through digital innovation.
Galaxy Backbone is also expected to unveil a refreshed brand identity later in the week, reflecting its transition from a government ICT infrastructure provider to a broader digital transformation enabler connecting governments, businesses and institutions through secure and smart digital solutions.
Adeyanju expressed confidence that the organisation has the capacity to emerge as one of the leading digital transformation institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa, adding that the next 20 years would focus on unlocking the full potential of the digital foundations already laid for Nigeria’s future.
