The Amir of the Faith Unites Muslims Charity Initiative (FUMCI), Ustadh Muh. Saheed Subair, has advised Nigerians to regularly check their health status to prevent spike in their blood pressure and sudden death.
He gave the advice at this year’s edition of the organisation’s annual medical screening on hypertension, diabetes and malaria, with the distribution of free drugs, held in Lagos.
The event tagged, ‘Project fit-for Ramadan’ also serves as one of the events marking the 10th year anniversary of the organisation.
In his opening remark, Amir Subair advised Muslims to eat healthy and avoid non-communicable diseases.
He said the motive behind the medical outreach was to prepare Muslims ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, and also assist residents to know their health status, thereby enhancing the life of the people that have health challenges.
According to him, “Taking care of our health is one of the demands of Islam. It is part of our responsibilities as Muslims to live a fulfilled life.
“We give praises to Allah swt for taking us this far in the propagation of dawah. This medical outreach as we are all aware is held in preparation for the Ramadan. It is aimed at preparing us health wise for the Ramadan fast.
“Apart from this, it is also significant in that it signposts the marking of our 10th year as one of the foremost Islamic organisation in the country.
“The last 10 years have seen FUMCI propagating Islam and contributing to societal growth through charity and Islamic competition, and of course , our annual Project Feed-a-soul during Ramadan fast.
“It has been Allah all the way. And I cannot but thank all our sponsors and supporters for their supports and for being a partner on the path of Islam. May Allah reward us abundantly.
“What more can I say than to advise Muslims and other non-Muslim participants to take good care of their health and heed to doctor’s advice. They should avoid junk food and eat right because taking good care of our health is part of what Islam preaches.”
Leader of the medical team, Dr Taofeek Mahmud, during his health talk said eating a healthy diet of fresh and natural foods such as vegetables and fruit, limited amounts of fats and oils, and regular exercise, reduce the risk of developing chronic and non-communicable diseases, such as obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and cancer.
Dr Mahmud urged Nigerians to live a healthy lifestyle and frequently check their health status to prevent avoidable death.
He said: “Any patient that manifests these symptoms should head to the hospital to screen for diabetes. Diabetes is one of the silent killer diseases while highlighting some of the steps to manage the disease.
“Hypertension goes unnoticed many times. It is until some patients are down with stroke that they are aware of the hypertensive situation. So, it is compulsory to check our BP, at least, every three months.”
