Fulham manager, Marco Silva has pinpointed a crucial area where Super Eagles defender, Calvin Bassey must improve to unlock his full potential and reach the elite level of world football.

Bassey, who joined Fulham from Ajax, has been instrumental in the Cottagers’ impressive campaign, contributing both defensively and offensively in their push for European qualification.

The 25-year-old Nigerian international has made 32 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring two goals and earning praise for his solid performances at the heart of defence.

Despite a challenging spell at Ajax, Bassey has bounced back under Silva’s guidance, showcasing physical strength, speed, and commitment.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Fulham boss expressed confidence in Bassey’s abilities but stressed the need for improvement in one key aspect — aerial duels.

The Portuguese said: “I know him very well. As I’ve said many times already since he joined ourselves after a really difficult season at Ajax after the Rangers spell, we really believe in him.

“I really believe that he’s capable of playing to a very high level, definitely. He ticks all the boxes that a modern footballer and defender has to be.

“He has to improve to aerial duels, all the other things he has really. He’s quick, strong… the duels – he has to be more concentrated and focused in all the moments of the game to make the other step.”

Silva’s comments come at a time when Bassey is also key to Super Eagles team ahead of the upcoming Unity Cup and the continuation of Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
