A young French women has survived a rare shark attack off New Zealand’s South Island, on Thursday.
The tourist in her 20s, was flown to Dunedin Hospital by rescue helicopter with moderate leg injuries, a Spokesman for St John Ambulance Service said.
She was body boarding with friends at Porpoise Bay on the South-Eastern corner of the South Island, which is popular with tourists for its resident pods of Hector’s Dolphins when she was attacked.
“The shark was most likely a broad nose seven gill shark.
“Although there were about one or two similar attacks per year, New Zealand had one of the lowest shark attack rates for coastal countries in the world,’’ Marine Scientist Clinton Duffy said.
The last fatal shark attack happened on Muriwai Beach, near Auckland on the North Island in 2013. (NAN)
