FOC tours naval establishment in Lagos, seeks welfare and facility improvements

As part of his familiarisation tour of units under his command, the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Mike Oamen, has emphasised the strategic importance of personnel welfare and operational facilities.

Speaking during the tour, Admiral Oamen highlighted the pivotal role of the Navy’s flagship medical facility in catering for both naval personnel and civilians residing around Navy Town, adding that “the welfare of the men of the Nigerian Navy is one of the pillars of the Chief of the Naval Staff’s strategic vision for the Navy.”

He expressed satisfaction with the hospital’s performance but acknowledged that there is room for improvement.

His words: “The hospital staff are doing well. But of course, there’s room for improvement, and we’ll channel all our findings and challenges to the Chief of the Naval Staff for prompt response.”

Key issues identified include rising operational costs and unreliable power supply, which he stated the authorities are working to address by exploring alternative energy sources such as solar power and inverters.

The FOC said that a healthy workforce is crucial for the Navy to discharge its responsibilities effectively, hence the need to ensure the hospital is in good shape.

Commenting on the Naval Air Base, the officer commended the Navy’s efforts under current constraints, noting that, “It’s not about whether things are right or wrong. The Navy is trying its best with the resources available.”

Regarding conditions in Navy Town, Admiral Oamen affirmed that improvements are ongoing, adding that, “Navy Town is alright, but there’s always more we can do to enhance the living environment and boost morale. A conducive and livable barracks is essential for personnel to perform their duties happily and efficiently.”

He reiterated that all efforts align with the Chief of Naval Staff’s directive to prioritise personnel welfare, pointing out that, “The welfare of his men is paramount, and all commands are charged to maintain high morale. We’ll continue to improve barracks conditions to ensure a conducive environment for all naval personnel.”
