First Lady praises 44th Northern Derby as engine for tradition, economy

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has described the 44th Northern Derby as an “engine” for preserving cultural tradition and stimulating local economies.

Represented by the Wife of the Vice President, Nana Shettima, at the weekend, Mrs Tinubu commended organisers for sustaining the annual horse race that she said binds communities across northern Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries.

“Today’s event marks a celebration of sporting excellence and also a tribute to a rich heritage that has been passed down through generations,” the First Lady said, according to a statement issued by her media aide, Busola Kukoyi.

She said: “The Northern Derby stands as a proud symbol of our history, culture, and identity, bringing together horse racing supporters, traditional institutions, community leaders, and distinguished guests from across Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries.”

Beyond culture, Mrs Tinubu highlighted the Derby’s economic role, noting that it provides income-generating opportunities, particularly for young people.

“I am particularly pleased to learn that this noble authority was established through the vision and foresight of the late Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto and Premier of the former Northern Region. His commitment to preserving our cultural heritage and promoting unity continues to inspire us today,” she said.

“I commend the organisers for ensuring that this event remains a platform for preserving tradition while creating opportunities for young people to participate in sports, cultural activities, entrepreneurship, and community development,” the First Lady added, urging greater youth involvement.

Hajia Shettima earlier visited the palace of the Emir of Zazzau and President of the Northern States Turf Club Authority, HRM Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamali, to present the First Lady’s goodwill message.

At the palace, HRM Bamali appealed to the First Lady to use her influence to advance the Derby’s national profile.

“We appeal to the First Lady to champion the inclusion of horse racing into National Sports,” the Emir said, arguing that formal recognition would expand support for the sport and “go a long way in curbing youth restiveness.”

He also called for intensified promotion of culture and tradition among women and youth.

Organisers concluded the 44th edition, tagged Zaria 2026, with trophies and cash awards for winners, celebrating both competitive achievement and the event’s role as a livelihood and cultural platform.
