Fire: FG certifies 10,692 electrical projects

Following the high rate of destructions caused by fire, the Federal Government  has certified over 10,692 electricity projects out of 15,931 projects  in Nigeria.

Managing Director of Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), Aliyu Tukur, who disclosed this  in Abuja during an interactive session with energy reporters at the weekend, noted that the agency has monitored 12,114 existing networks and power systems nationwide as  part of its  mandate.

Also, over 3,255 electrical installations at factories and hazardous installations have been inspected by NEMSA.

“There has been significant increase in the total number of manufacturers of electric concrete poles certified in Nigeria. It has risen from 21 in 2016 to 143 in 2021

It has established and inaugurated the first Meter Generation Museum/Gallery at the National Meter Test Station, Oshodi, Lagos. Awaiting commissioning is that of Kaduna and Port Harcourt certification of meter manufacturers in Nigeria.

“Increase in the category of certification schemes of electrical installation personnel namely: Personnel Electrical Installation,   Renewable Energy Installation,  Contractors Personnel Electricity Metering Installation,  Personnel Electrical Technical Personnel Certification.

Undertaking the Nigerian National Accreditation System (NINAS). ISO/IEC 17024 Certification process for the RSC Unit

“Inauguration of task force monitoring / evaluation of existing networks to stem the use of electrical materials and equipment.

Roundtable for legislature, judiciary and other stakeholders on the enforcement of technical standards,

Training of 18 electrical engineers of NEMSA on renewable energy by GIZ” he said.

As a regulatory and enforcement agency, NEMSA, he said, has prosecuted and jailed people who imported substandard electrical materials. Although, the agency is not in the ports, it is collaborating with agencies like Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Nigeria Customs  Service (NCS) etc  to nip in the bud, injurious materials destined to Nigerian markets.
