Fighting Concrete Corrosion: A Breakthrough in Wastewater Infrastructure Protection

Globally, wastewater infrastructure is facing a silent but serious threat: microbially induced concrete corrosion (MICC). This form of concrete deterioration, caused by bacteria that produce sulfuric acid, weakens wastewater systems, leading to expensive repairs, service disruptions, and potential health hazards. However, new research provides valuable insights into protecting these critical structures.

The study carried out by Nigerian researcher/engineer, Oluwafisayomi Folorunso, the study tested different surface treatments to slow MICC, using ASTM international standards. The research evaluated biocidal admixtures, acid-resistant coatings (ARC), and sodium nitrite (NaNO₂) treatments to determine their effectiveness in preventing concrete degradation.

The results showed that biocidal admixtures were the most effective in reducing corrosion and preserving concrete strength. Sodium nitrite also improved durability, particularly in maintaining flexural strength, while acid-resistant coatings provided moderate protection against sulfate attack. A key finding was that MICC progresses nearly twice as fast under biogenic conditions—common in Nigeria’s humid wastewater environments—compared to purely chemical corrosion.

As Nigeria continues to expand its urban infrastructure, this research highlights the urgent need for protective measures in wastewater systems. A combination of biocidal treatments and acid-resistant coatings could significantly extend the lifespan of concrete structures, reducing maintenance costs for local governments and improving sanitation services for communities.

Further research is needed to adapt these solutions to Nigeria’s specific environmental conditions and available materials. With proper investment in wastewater infrastructure, innovative protection strategies like those explored in this study can help ensure stronger, longer-lasting systems for the country’s growing population.
