The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has officially extended the tenure of the board of the Nigeria Basketball Federation led by Musa Kida until October 15, 2026.
The decision was conveyed in a formal letter signed by FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis and addressed to Kida. In the correspondence, FIBA also stated that it would not approve any amendments to the NBBF constitution within the period of the tenure extension.
FIBA recalled the 2022 crisis involving the federation and the Nigerian government, which resulted in the country’s withdrawal from international basketball competitions. The dispute forced Nigeria’s women’s national team, D’Tigress, to miss the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, with Mali stepping in as replacement.
According to the world basketball body, the extension is aimed at preventing a recurrence of such disruptions and ensuring administrative stability ahead of the 2026 edition of the Women’s World Cup scheduled for September.
FIBA further stated that the current board under Kida will oversee Nigeria’s participation in the tournament, after which a new board is expected to take office from October 16, 2026.
While acknowledging that similar disputes over legitimacy had arisen in 2017, FIBA maintained that despite protests from stakeholders, it would not entertain further changes, stressing the importance of consistency in the administration of the sport in Nigeria.
