Three students of the Federal Government College, Ijanikin, Lagos have been placed on indefinite suspension because their parents took the Parent Teachers Association (PTA) of the school to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

One of the suspension letters dated December 5th, 2023, was signed by the Vice Principal, Students Affairs, Mrs. A.O. Oluwaseyitan.

The letter reads: “I am directed to inform you that the School Based Management Committee (SBMC), which is the highest decision making body of the college has directed that your ward, Elusogbon Muhammed Ayomide should remain with you until the EFCC case is decided.

“You should therefore not bother to bring him back to school when school resumes in January 2023/2024 academic session.”

Before their suspension, the students were blocked by the school from accessing their portal to check their promotional examination results and to know the amount to pay next session.

One of the parents, Mrs. Falilat Elusogbon told our Correspondent that his son’s suspension was part of pressure by the school management to force her and two other parents to withdraw the case from EFCC.

Elusogbon disclosed that a male teacher informed his son that he would not be registered for the May/June 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

Our Correspondent gathered that three students whose parents dragged the PTA to EFCC were suspended. One of the students, Ayomide is in SS3 while two others are in SS2.

Before the suspension letters, two teachers Mrs.Adebiyi and Mrs. Nkechi called two of the parents to come and pick their wards from school following the suspension.

Mrs. Elusogbon said his son, who is in a state of shock was first victimized when he was removed from the Prefect list and secondly, when a male teacher on December 11th informed him that his name had been removed from the WAEC and NECO registration list.

Elusogbon said she visited the school and was told to withdraw the case from EFCC or vollect the suspension letter of her son.

“They insisted that I sign the letter because it is what the ministry wants. That other parents children have been sent home and that I am the only one left,” she stated.

She made a passionate appeal to the Minister of Education and the National Assembly Committee on Basic and Secondary Education to intervene in the issue so that her son would write WASSCE and NECO SSCE next year.
Principal of the school, Dr. Kehinde Famuyibo told our Correspondent that he doesn’t know anything about the suspension of the students, adding, “the decision has been taken before I assumed office.”
Chairman of the PTA, Mr. Tokede Williams said: “I don’t know about the suspension of the students. I don’t have anything to say about it. Talk to the Minister of Education.”
