The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to back the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) as it prepares to host the 2026 Commonwealth Nurses and Midwives Federation Conference (CNMF) for the West African region in Abuja.
The CNMF conference aims to enhance healthcare systems, advance nursing practices, and strengthen cooperation among Commonwealth nations.
The pledge was contained in a statement by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Abiodun Oladunjoye, yesterday, on behalf of the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, during a courtesy visit by the NANNM leadership to the State House, Abuja.
He underscored the administration’s dedication to healthcare reforms, highlighting achievements such as the revitalisation of primary healthcare centres, expanding the national health insurance to cover 60 million Nigerians from the previous 20 million, and boosting investments in health infrastructure and workforce development.
“We congratulate the association for securing the first-ever hosting of this prestigious event in West Africa,” Gbajabiamila stated. “We wish you all the very best and, undoubtedly, the government will play whatever role it deems fit and is in a position to play.”
He stressed the importance of a clear plan: “I think it’s important if this office can get a clear plan as to where you are, the roadmap to April, what you’ve done, and how you intend to execute it.”
He also called for enhanced cooperation between NANNM, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, and the Coordinating Minister of Health, Ali Pate, to ensure seamless event coordination.
NANNM’s National President, Comrade Haruna Mamman, requested the government’s assistance in hosting the conference scheduled from April 20 to 24, 2026. He noted the event’s value in advancing Nigeria’s standing in healthcare leadership and facilitating international collaboration.
“This conference will bring nurses and midwives from 56 Commonwealth countries, and will be attended by the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Hon. Shirley Botchwey,” Mamman shared. “It aligns perfectly with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and will promote professional excellence and international partnerships.”
Mamman appealed for government support in visa facilitation, financial aid, and hosting CNMF executives from the UK, Europe, and Africa. He also requested a courtesy audience with President Tinubu and for the president to formally inaugurate the conference.
“We are confident in Mr. President’s political will to make Nigeria a model for others. This conference will surely make Nigeria a pride of the continent,” he affirmed.
