Director General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA),
Moses Beckley, has said that the Federal Government was sponsoring a bill to
regulate the indiscriminate drilling of borehole.
Beckley, who disclosed this to Daily Sun, on Monday, in Abuja, said the
move was a better way to curb over extraction of water which may cause
problem for the country.
Beckley also said that if the bill was passed, it won’t affect water
scarcity especially for those residing in rural areas. But advised
states government, as a matter of urgency to construct waterways and
once that was done there would be no need for borehole drilling.
“The issue here is that what is expected the federal government in
collaboration with state government should construct water ways or
water supply and once that is done there won’t be no need for borehole
drilling indiscriminately.
It won’t be advisable to drill borehole because at the end of the day
once there is over extraction that can cause another problem.”
“The Bill when signed into Law will greatly enhance effective water
governance for the good of all. It will also rescue Nigeria from the
foreseeable water crisis,” he said.
