The Minister of State for Education, Yusuf Tanko Sununu, has revealed that President Bola Tinubu has initiated an agenda to remove approximately 20 million out-of-school children from the streets and prioritize education in Nigeria.
Sununu made this disclosure at the groundbreaking foundation laying ceremony of the National Examination Council (NECO) offices in Lafia, Nasarawa State yesterday.
According to the minister, President Tinubu has granted approval for a project aimed at improving the quality of education in Nigeria.
“The project will conduct a census to provide reliable and accurate data on schools, students, and teachers from kindergarten to tertiary institutions, both private and public,” Sununu explained.
He emphasized that the data will include information on schools, students, and teachers, which will enable the government to make informed decisions to improve the education sector.
Sununu assured that President Tinubu’s administration is committed to ensuring every child in Nigeria receives an education while commending NECO for its efforts in improving the education sector and urged stakeholders to support the government’s initiatives.
In his words, “We are committed to ensuring that every child in Nigeria has access to quality education, and we will work tirelessly to achieve this goal.” – Minister of State for Education, Yusuf Tanko Sununu.
Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Education, Muhammad Sani Bala, pledged his administration’s commitment to quality education for the state’s citizens.
Prof. Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, Registeral/Chief Executive of NECO, said his assessment of existing facilities nationwide revealed a need for infrastructure upgrades, with many state offices housed in rented apartments.
Wushishi explained that the new state offices in Abia, Jigawa, Rivers, Sokoto, and Taraba, along with the Nasarawa State edifice, will serve as beacons of excellence in examination administration.
“The new offices will provide a conducive environment for our staff to operate efficiently and effectively,” Wushishi said.
Sun reports that the groundbreaking ceremony was simultaneously held in six other states, marking a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to prioritize education.
