To bolster Nigeria’s refining capacity and promote economic self-sufficiency, the Federal Government has inaugurated a Technical Sub-Committee tasked with developing a framework for the sale of crude oil to local refineries in Naira. This initiative marks a significant step towards reducing Nigeria’s dependence on crude oil exports and fostering the growth of local expertise within the energy sector.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, inaugurated the committee today at his office in Abuja. He emphasized that this effort aligns with a key presidential directive aimed at revolutionizing the nation’s energy sector by enabling local refineries to access crude oil more efficiently while boosting domestic production and refining capacity.

The inauguration followed a crucial stakeholders’ meeting that brought together government officials and representatives from leading local refineries, including Dangote Refinery. The discussions centered on the strategic implementation of this directive and its potential to reshape Nigeria’s energy landscape.

The Technical sub-committee, chaired by Mr. Edun, comprises key industry leaders, including the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Finance, Mrs. Lydia Shehu Jafiya; the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Dr. Zacch Adedeji; and representatives from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Afrexim Bank, and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). Together, they are charged with the critical task of crafting a robust template to ensure the effective implementation of the Naira-based crude sales initiative.

In his remarks, Mr. Edun explained that the initiative was part of a broader strategy to position Nigeria as a regional refining hub, thereby catalyzing economic growth and development. He highlighted that reducing the country’s reliance on crude oil exports and fostering local refinery capacity is key to Nigeria’s long-term economic stability and competitiveness in the global energy market.

The Minister praised the committee members for their commitment and expertise, urging them to work diligently to meet the high expectations of this presidential mandate. He stressed that the ultimate goal is to create an energy sector that is self-reliant, sustainable, and globally competitive.

With the inauguration of this committee, Nigeria stands on the brink of a transformative shift in its energy sector. The framework for Naira-based crude sales to local refineries represents a bold step toward self-sufficiency and energy security. This initiative is expected to unlock substantial economic growth, reduce poverty, and significantly enhance the country’s refining capacity.

As Nigeria embarks on this strategic journey, the success of this initiative will depend heavily on the diligence and foresight of the Technical Sub-Committee. Their work will be instrumental in realizing the country’s ambitions of becoming a refining powerhouse, paving the way for a brighter and more prosperous future for all Nigerians.
