The Federal Government has hailed the remodelling and upgrading of an eight-million vaccine capacity central cold store in Maiduguri by Borno State government and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Ali Pate, gave the commendation in Maiduguri yesterday at the commissioning of the facility remodelled and upgraded from 1.5-million vaccine capacity to 8-million capacity after the September 2024 devastating floods.

“I was in Maiduguri in September 2024 to sympathise with the state. I saw the level of devastation of floods on the cold store. Today, the upgrading has changed the store in terms of capacity, new facilities. The Federal Government hails this effort and commends Borno government and out partner,” he disclosed.

The minister, who was represented by the Executive Director National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Muyi Aina, promised FG’s support and continues collaboration with Borno government and UNICEF.  UNICEF Chief of Field Office in Northeast, Mr. Francis Butichi, lauded FG and Borno State government for their leadership and partnership in restoring this critical public health infrastructure

He said the cold store is the backbone of routine immunisations and vaccination campaign in the state.

“Without functional cold chain, vaccination cannot reach the last mile. Without vaccines, children are exposed to preventable diseases and the risk of death,” he explained.

He said the facility would serve all the 27 local government in the state as well as the neighbouring Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi and Adamawa states.
