Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, has disclosed that under the Renewed Hope Agenda spearheaded by President Bola Tinubu, the ministry has created over 252,800 jobs and is constructing 10,000 housing units across the country.
Briefing State House Correspondents, he disclosed a plan to provide free housing units to 77,400 vulnerable Nigerians across all 774 local government areas under the proposed National Social Housing Fund.
He explained that the overall target, which is to raise N1.2 trillion through voluntary monthly contributions of N5,000 or N60,000 annually from Nigerians, is awaiting legislative approval to become operational. Dangiwa explained that the programme targets the most vulnerable in society, offering them homes free of charge as part of the administration’s commitment to inclusive development.
“The timeline quite well now is before the end of 2025, the National Social Housing Fund is going to be on ground. We have done all our groundwork. The report is ready, and we have written letters to all stakeholders, including the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Budget Office, to ensure we have their backing before presenting it to the Federal Executive Council.”
Breaking it down, the minister said: “We have various options of funding these things. There is one option that we want to ensure that at least 10 percent of Nigeria’s population, should make a voluntary contribution of 5000 Naira monthly. For one year, we are going to have 1.2 trillion. 10 percent of the total population of Nigerians is almost 20 million.”
He emphasised the critical role of leadership in achieving these milestones. “Everything starts with good leadership. When the vision is clear and there is an unwavering commitment to serve, great things happen,” he stated.
