The Federal Government has backed mass production of electric vehicles to curb carbon emission and to boost transportation system.
Director General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Omotenioye Majekodunmi, who spoke at the launch of the Climate-Smart Electric Vehicle Recharge Hub in Abuja, BYD Nigeria Motor Limited at the weekend, said the project aligned with Nigeria’s Just Transition Guidelines and the country’s newly updated NDC 3.0 targets.
Represented by Jummai Vandu, she described the hub as tangible hope, stressing that Nigeria must transition at a pace consistent with its national realities, particularly its dependence on fossil-fuel revenue.
Majekodunmi pledged technical support to BYD to replicate the model across sub-nationals, adding that proper Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) systems would help quantify emissions reduced through EV adoption and unlock climate finance. BYD Nigeria Motor Limited Vice Chairman, Moses Ayom, declared that the electric vehicle (EV) revolution would play a role in shaping Abuja’s emerging smart-city ecosystem.
He maintained that modern mobility systems cannot be realised without climate-friendly transportation infrastructure.
Ayom said the new facility signaled the beginning of a practical shift from policy talk to real-world climate action in Nigeria.
“We believe the EV revolution will be key to the core areas of urban mobility, expansion of transportation networks, intelligent traffic systems, and public
transport solutions to reduce congestion and enhance accessibility at the heart of the Smart City project,” he said.
Ayom explained that the hub was capable of fully charging an electric car in 40 minutes and represented BYD Nigeria, Haitong Ltd and GRACO’s commitment to driving Nigeria’s just-transition pathway with investments that create jobs, transfer technology and reduce fossil-fuel dependence.
He described the project as a direct response to outcomes of COP-30 in Belém, which emphasised implementation and the need for countries and corporations to move from negotiation tables to tangible climate solutions.
Ayom noted that the Federal Government’s Renewable Energy and Green Transition Agenda championed by President Bola Tinubu and Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike provide a conducive policy environment for green mobility investments.
He said BYD and partners are determined to complement government efforts by accelerating Nigeria’s entry into the global clean-transportation ecosystem.
On its part, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed commended BYD for providing a charging station compatible with all EV brands.
Mohammed, represented by the Chief Route Commander, Christopher Eya, said EV adoption would curb harmful emissions that threaten public health and environmental quality.
