The Federal University Lokoja will on Saturday hold the 6th and 7th combined convocation ceremony as 2,511 students will be awarded various degrees with 31 students bagging the First Class Honours
Addressing newsmen on Monday at the permanent site of the university in commencement of the week long activities heralding the convocation, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Olayemi Akinwumi said the university has undergone drastic transformation under his watch.
According to him , a total of 2,511 graduates will be conferred with first degrees, 99 master degrees, and 128 Postgraduate diploma while Honorary degrees would also be conferred on eminent personalities who have contributed to the development of the nation.
A breakdown of the data for the two sets, shows that 61 persons bag first class honours, 605 bag second class upper division, 1,404 are in second class lower division, 447 are in third class honours and 4 persons bag pass degree.
Prof Akinwumi said although the university has two big hostels, the students of the will continue to live outside the campus, pending the time the institution can guarantee adequate security for the students
He decried the random security breaches in educational institutions across the country and said his administration introduced the engagement of hunters and vigilantes to boost safety and security on campus.
The Vice Chancellor, in a brief account of his stewardship, listed his achievements to include relocation to the permanent site at Felele, establishment of new academic programmes, notably medicine, nursing and engineering and a significant improvement in international academic ranking for the university
Other achievements he said,are the establishment of both primary and secondary schools of international standard, infrastructure development, and creation of consultancy services
The VC who called on president Bola Tinubu to allow federal universities in the country operate independently
without joining the Treasury Single Account system said the TSA has adversely affected the smooth running of the university education in the country.
For example, he said as the Vice Chancellor he could not employ just a cleaner without passing through rigorous stages in Abuja saying the school is in dire need of manpower as the new courses introduced needed to be manned by appropriate qualified professionals.
“Two inaugural lectures were held before I assumed office in 2021. Today, a total of 15 inaugural lectures have taken place. It is a university culture and a way of showcasing our achievements.
“The university during this convocation ceremony will be launching an endowment fund. We are soliciting the support and contributions of all well-meaning Nigerians to be part of the launch while we appeal to the good people of this state, specifically our politicians, to assist the university.” He added
