FCT polls conducted under an unknown law – Kenneth Okonkwo

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has alleged that the recent Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections were conducted under what he described as an “unknown law.”

Okonkwo made the claim on Monday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, where he questioned the legal foundation of the polls that produced victories for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in five of the six area councils.

According to him, the absence of a publicly gazetted copy of the Electoral Act 2026 renders the electoral process questionable and contrary to the rule of law.

“Nigerians should not be carried away by what this dubious APC is doing. Up till now, the gazetted copy of the Electoral Act 2026 is not out,” he said.

He maintained that implementing a law that has not been officially published amounts to imposing an unknown legal framework on the electorate.

“The FCT election was conducted under an unknown law. And this is against the rule of law,” Okonkwo stated.

The former Labour Party presidential campaign spokesperson argued that for any legislation to be binding, it must first be made publicly available.

“Before you implement a law on the people, it must be publicly published,” he added.

Okonkwo further called on Nigerians to demand greater transparency in the legal processes guiding elections, warning that failure to do so could erode public confidence in democratic institutions.

The FCT Area Council elections were held last weekend, with the APC emerging dominant across most of the councils.
