Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has deployed intelligence officers to Banex Plaza, a well-known electronics and telecommunications market in Abuja, following a violent conflict that erupted between soldiers and traders on Saturday.

A viral video circulating on social media platform X shows a chaotic scene where a multitude of civilians are seen overpowering several soldiers during a free-for-all fight at Banex Plaza. The incident has raised concerns about security and order in the busy market area.

Attempts to get comments from the Defence Headquarters and Nigerian Army spokesperson, Onyema Nwachukwu, were unsuccessful as of the time of reporting.

According to a trader at Banex, identified only as Abdul, the conflict originated from a dispute over the sale of a mobile phone. “There’s a problem at Banex now. Some soldiers came to complain about a phone, and during an argument with the traders, a fight ensued,” Abdul explained.

In response to the incident, the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, Benett Igweh, has taken swift action by deploying the FCT Intelligence Response Team to the market. “The CP has deployed the Intelligence Response Team to the scene,” Adeh stated.

The deployment aims to restore peace and order at Banex Plaza and prevent further escalation of violence. The police are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that those involved are held accountable.

This incident underscores the need for effective conflict resolution mechanisms and improved communication between security forces and civilians to prevent such clashes in the future.
