The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested 1,077 suspects across various criminal activities and recovered N285 million from fraud-related cases in 2024
According to FCT Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Josephine Adeh, the Command recorded a total of 1,426 reported cases and arrested 1,077 suspects for various offenses, including kidnapping, armed robbery, car theft, and fraud.
“ Being Nigeria’s political and business hub, Abuja faced significant security challenges at the start of the year”.
The Command noted that strategic interventions, including robust community policing, intelligence-led operations, and collaboration with sister agencies, have led to a 15.1% reduction in crime incidents compared to 2023.
The Command also disclosed that in the fight against kidnapping, 216 suspects were arrested, 68 victims rescued, and 38 suspects charged to court, resulting in 21 convictions.
“Efforts to combat armed robbery led to the arrest of 132 suspects, the recovery of N68.5 million, and 11 convictions.
“Similarly, 422 suspects were apprehended for fraud, with N285 million recovered and 58 convictions secured.
“ In cases of car theft, 64 suspects were arrested, 73 stolen vehicles were recovered, and 11 convictions were obtained”.
The Command also stated that it recovered various items, including 376 firearms, among them, 13 AK-47 magazines and 187 rounds of ammunition.
“Financial recoveries amounted to N409.9 million, which included N36.8 million from kidnapping suspects and N285 million from fraud cases. Additionally, 73 stolen vehicles were retrieved, many of which were linked to car thefts, “one-chance” robberies, and cult-related activities”.
The Command further honoured 140 police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
“Their dedication and service to ensuring the safety of FCT residents were acknowledged and deeply appreciated”.
Looking ahead, the Command has unveiled strategic plans to intensify its fight against crime and further enhance the safety and security of the Federal Capital Territory.
The Command plans to intensify community policing engagements, intelligence-driven operations, and public sensitization campaigns to address emerging security challenges.
