She said her journey into fashion design began with a deep appreciation for clothing and how it can transform the way people feel about themselves.

In this interview, she spoke about her journey into the business, future and challenges of the industry in Nigeria.

What inspired you to become a fashion designer

From a young age, I was always drawn to elegant designs. I was in love with the process of turning ideas into beautiful outfits. I had an aunt that would always stand out every Sunday when going to church. I was in love with her pieces as a young child, and I just wanted to make elegant dresses for myself too. I was inspired especially by the idea that styles don’t have to be expensive to look beautiful. Basically I have been in the fashion industry for over four years

What influences your design style?

My style is influenced by the desire to create designs that make people feel confident and beautiful. I love styles that are sophisticated, yet unique. I love pieces that make statements while still feeling refined and wearable. I’m also inspired by people who carry themselves with grace and originality, as well as by classic and modern fashion trends.

Can you describe your creative process from idea to finished piece?

My creative process usually begins with inspiration. I draw designs from fashion trends, art or culture. Sometimes it starts with a simple idea or colour combination. Once I have a concept I begin sketching and developing the design. I focus on how I want the outfit to actually look and feel. Then I move over to select fabrics and materials that best match the vision of the design. Next is pattern making and tailoring where the design start coming to life. I pay attention to fitting and finishing because the quality of a garment is as important as the design itself. Lastly, I review the finished piece, and make any necessary adjustments to ensure it meets the standards and vision I had from the onset.

How do you stay updated with current fashion trends?

It’s by constantly observing the fashion industry through the social media, runway shows and creative platforms where designers showcase new ideas. I also pay attention to evolving styles, colours and customer preferences because fashion is always changing.

What fabrics do you enjoy working with most, and why?

I can’t say a particular fabric because sometimes your best fabric might not suit your design because choosing the right fabric is an important part of the creative process. As much as I like working with ankara or lace, I enjoy working with fabrics like silk, chiffon and crepe because they are elegant, versatile and bring a luxurious feel to designs.

What challenges have you faced as a fashion designer, and how did you overcome them?

One of the challenges I’ve faced as a designer is turning creative ideas into designs that are both stylish and practical. Sometimes a concept looks perfect on paper but bringing it to life requires a whole lot. But, I’ve learned to overcome this by continuously improving my skills, being open to learning and paying close attention to craftsmanship and finishing.

What has been your most memorable project so far?

One of my most memorable projects so far has been creating designs that allow me fully express my creativity and attention to details. What made the project especially memorable was the process. It reminded me why I love fashion and how powerful clothing can be in expressing personality. Each project actually teaches me something new.

How do you balance creativity with client preferences?

I balance creativity with client preferences by first understanding the client’s personality, needs and vision for the design. Once I understand what the client wants, I use my creativity to enhance the design because I believe fashion is collaboration. It’s important for the client to feel heard and comfortable while still bringing a creative and professional touch to the final piece. I also believe communication is very important throughout the process by listening carefully and offering professional guidance.

How do you market your designs and attract clients?

I market my designs by combining social media visibility, personal branding and client referrals. Actually my brand has been surviving more on clients referrals but I’m trying to push it out more on social media where I can showcase not just finished pieces, but also my creative process. Also looking forward to collaborate with photographers, makeup artists and stylists for creative shoots that will help expand my reach.

What is your view on the future of fashion in Nigeria?

I believe the industry is moving towards more structure, global visibility and innovation. The future of Nigeria in fashion industry looks very promising and exciting. There’s also a growing appreciation for bespoke tailoring, luxury craftsmanship, and African inspired designs which position Nigeria as a key player in the global fashion space. With the rise of social media platforms, Nigeria designers now have more opportunities to showcase their work to global audience. I see Nigeria becoming a major fashion hub in Africa with designers who are not only creative, but also globally competitive and business minded.

What changes would you like to see in the local fashion industry?

One change I would like to see in the local fashion industry is more emphasis on quality, craftsmanship and finishing. There is already lots of creativity, but improving technical skills and attention to details would help local designers compete more strongly on a global level. Another important change is stronger collaboration within the industry.

Lastly I would love to see better access to training, funding and production resources for emerging designers. Many talented creatives have great ideas but lack support needed to fully develope and scale their brands.

What advice would you give to young people aspiring to become fashion designers?

Start with passion and stay committed to learning. Focus in building your skills step by step. Fashion design is a journey that requires patience, dedication, consistency and willingness to grow through practice. Also don’t be afraid to start small. Every great designer begins somewhere. What matters is your dedication to improving, and your ability to keep going even when things are changing.
