In celebration of his 70th birthday and 17th coronation anniversary, the Osemawe and paramount ruler of Ondo Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Oba Dr Victor Adesimbo Kiladejo, Jilo III, has conferred chieftaincy titles on Professor Toyin Falola and his wife, Dr. Bisi Falola, as Bobapitan (Royal Historian) and Yeye Bobapitan of Ondo Kingdom respectively.
Ondo High Chiefs, family and friends of Professor Falola not only graced the event but spoke glowingly of the virtues of the newly installed chief. The installation was held at Osemawe’s Palace Town Hall, Ondo.
While commending Falola, Oba Kiladejo described him as a man of honor, affirming that Falola’s contributions to the development of the kingdom cannot be overemphasized.
In his reaction, the new Bobapitan thanked the traditional ruler and the people, just as he pledged to continue to support the kingdom in all its aspirations.
Falola is one of Africa’s greatest historians. A professor in several universities, he is a Fellow of the Historical Society of Nigeria and of the Nigerian Academy of Letters, and has served as the president of the African Studies Association. He is currently the Jacob and Frances Sanger Mossiker Chair in the Humanities at the University of Texas at Austin. His research interest is African History since the 19th century in the tradition of the Ibadan School; his geographic areas of interest include Africa, Latin America and the United States; and his thematic fields include Atlantic history, diaspora and migration, empire and globalization, intellectual history, international relations, religion and culture. Falola is author and editor of more than two hundred books.
