Explosions reverberated through central Kyiv during Monday’s rush hour as Russia unleashed a significant missile and drone attack across Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed the launch of multiple missiles from 11 TU-95 strategic bombers. Outside the capital, Reuters reporters heard air defences engaging incoming targets.

An apartment block sustained damage and explosions in Lutsk, a city in northwest Russia, according to local authorities, who are also looking into potential casualties. In response, Poland’s Operational Command activated Polish and partner aircraft. The attack also targeted western regions of Ukraine.

This offensive follows weeks of heightened anticipation of a major Russian attack, particularly around Ukraine’s Independence Day, observed on Saturday. Andriy Yermak, President Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, warned on Telegram, “The desire to destroy our energy will cost the Russians dearly: their infrastructure.”

Two waves of drone assaults were confirmed by Ukraine earlier on Monday; no immediate indications of damage or injuries were made. The commander of the military administration in Kyiv, Serhiy Popko, said that up to ten drones were destroyed close to the city.

Both Russia and Ukraine deny targeting civilians, claiming their attacks focus on infrastructure vital to the opposing side’s war effort.
