From Fred Ezeh, Abuja

The Federal Government has announced that 16 is now the official entry age into tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa announced the decision at the opening of the 2025 Policy Meeting of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

The Minister noted that the 18-year decision taken at last year’s Policy Meeting has been reversed and replaced with 16 years.

He directed institutions to abide by the new decision, stating that any violation would be met with severe sanctions.

He stated that the integration of the National Identification Number (NIN) has come to stay, stressing that it will help to control age falsification.

He also warned institutions against engaging in admission outside the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS), stating that such admissions would be regarded as illegal.
