How do you define an artiste? Do you judge them by the volume of records they release during their lifetime? Can they be assessed via their stage performance at shows, concerts, and arenas? Do you judge them based on word of mouth from people who knew them? Different parameters are used in judging an artiste and its artistic traits. Some of them might have the best record around; however, their stage performance might be far from being awesome. The lucky few have both; they know how to perform on stage, and they have a good number of neat and fantastic tracks.
The Nigeria-born gospel singer, record maker, and songwriter Elijah Daniel Omo Majemu is arguably one of them. He has a good record and performs brilliantly on stage. While going through his January 2024 released live performance pack, one of his tracks stood out for me. The life ministration of “Lifting Praise (Live) encapsulates so many things from the singer.
Forty-six seconds short of the minute mark, Elijah Daniel leverages the tuneful instrumental in scoring up a bright track. The baseline kicks off the instrument; it is quickly joined by the Omele drum and the cymbals, with the clean guitar tagging along. The formation of this instrumental was cemented by Elijah Daniel Omo Majemu’s vocals. The backup singers were on hand to brighten up the performance. While the artiste effortlessly switched between songs, the backup singer deliberately kept to key, highlighting his brilliance. Consciously, Elijah Daniel was the star of the performance while the backup singers were conspicuously behind him.
Daniel Elijah Omo Majemu moves from songs like “Ijinle Ninu Ijinle,” “Alayomi ni,” Bon shey lo ilu,” “Tobechukwu,” “Modupe,” “Olorun Agbaye,” “Miracle no dey tire Jesus,” and others. The song switches between a myriad of languages: Yoruba, English, and even Pidgin. It exhibits the astuteness, dynamism, and creativity of Elijah Daniel Omo Majemu. Simply put, “Lifting Praise (Live) is a medley of songs with the artiste seamlessly navigating it. By the time the song reached its crescendo, it was glaring. While an artist remains the most booked Nigerian gospel artiste; he is just effortlessly exceptional.
Right now, Elijah Daniel Omo Majemu continues to make grand Statements with his state-of-the-art stage performances. His years of perseverance and practice seem to have finally paid off. Every opportunity he sees to showcase his craft continues to be optimally utilized. While more should still be expected from the singer, right now, the one in stock is enough to go around.
