The Society of Specialists in Airway Management (SSAM) has reaffirmed its commitment to improving patient safety and airway management practices in Nigeria.
This was made known at the end of its third Annual Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Calabar, the Cross River state capital. SSAM emphasized the importance of adhering to guidelines, developing adaptable protocols, and making airway equipment available in all healthcare institutions.
The conference, themed “Patient Safety, Research and Quality Improvement in Airway Management,” brought together healthcare professionals from across the country and beyond.
The Society’s pioneer National President, Dr. Aderonke Adesiyan, highlighted the its achievements and future plans She noted significant disparity between low and middle income countries in terms of airway equipment availability and research.
“We will continue to encourage our members to be more involved in ensuring safe practices in airway management. There is still a significant disparity between LMICs (Low and Middle Income Countries) and developed countries in terms of the availability of basic and advanced airway equipment and research.
“Consequently, we will continue to partner with sponsors and healthcare financiers to make airway equipment available in all healthcare institutions in Nigeria”, she said.
Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), Dr. Queeneth Kalu disclosed that the LOC received abstracts not just from medical Doctors but also from Nurses and Pharmacists, signifying the true multidisciplinary nature of SSAM, which makes it a unique event.
