A Professor of Plant Science at the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology at the Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University Makurdi (JOSTUM), Celestine Aguoru, has stressed the need for the university to protect its campus from rampant logging and establish a reserved area for conserving rare plant species.

During his inaugural lecture at JOSTUM, Professor Aguoru emphasised the importance of preserving genetic variations and training experts in biosystematics and taxonomy.

He noted the lack of skilled personnel in these areas, which hampers the identification and authentication of plant materials.

Professor Aguoru also advocated for increased funding for biotechnology research, stating that Nigeria cannot rely on foreign aid.

He called for the creation of biotechnology research hubs across the nation and the inclusion of biosystematists in evaluating products of modern biotechnology.

In addition, Professor Aguoru criticised attempts to halt progress in modern biotechnology, citing unscientific conspiracy theories.

He urged the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) to be properly funded and equipped to regulate modern biotechnology effectively. Professor Aguoru in the lecture highlighted the need for Nigeria to develop its own biotechnology capabilities and preserve its natural resources for future generations.
