Former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau has returned to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) after defecting from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Shekarau announced his defection on Sunday at his residence along Mundubawa Avenue in Kano, where APC posters adorned the venue.
He made the move alongside Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, a prominent PDP chieftain.
Addressing supporters, Shekarau said the decision followed extensive consultations and a careful assessment of political realities, stressing that it was a collective resolution.
“We have weighed all the options and arrived at this collective resolution. Do you all agree?” he asked, urging anyone opposed to the move to speak up.
His defection came hours after he formally resigned from the PDP in a letter dated April 19, 2026, addressed to the party chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

In the letter, he stated that his resignation took immediate effect and expressed gratitude to party leaders at the ward level for their support.
“Accept this letter please as notice of my resignation from my position as member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with effect from today,” he wrote.
“I thank you for being a good leader, and pray that Allah will continue to guide you in your stewardship,” he added.
Copies of the resignation were also sent to the PDP leadership at the local government and state levels, indicating a formal exit from the party.
Shekarau’s return to the APC follows months of speculation amid internal crises within the PDP. He had earlier hinted at leaving the party, describing it as weakened by persistent challenges.
The former governor, who led Kano State from 2003 to 2011, has a history of political realignments, having previously moved between parties, including the APC and PDP.
